Abstract WirelessGRID Signal Strength Measurement Utility - Each WirelessGRID bridge has an integrated signal strength utility which is available at all times while the bridge is in operation. This utility is used to optimize the alignment of antennas during the initial setup of new links. In addition, this utility can be used to remotely check or continuously monitor the signal strength between any two bridges in a WirelessGRID network.&
Each WirelessGRID bridge has an integrated signal strength utility which is available at all times while the bridge is in operation. This utility is used to optimize the alignment of antennas during the initial setup of new links. In addition, this utility can be used to remotely check or continuously monitor the signal strength between any two bridges in a WirelessGRID network.

Because the utility is telnet-based, it provides a real-time stream of received signal strength (RSS) values. This real-time stream of values represent the amount of power being received at the bridge where the utility is being run.

To run the Signal Strength Monitor, you need to do the following.

1. Power-on the bridge, wait 20 seconds.

2. Generate some traffic to the other bridge (PING, traffic generator, etc.).

3. Open a telnet session to the bridge IP address, port 3000

(eg: telnet 192.168.1.70 3000)

4. Enter the Administrative User Name (Default: Airaya) and Administrative Password (Default: Airaya) when prompted, pressing enter after each entry.

Once this is done, you should see signal strength values (displayed in dBm) streaming accross your telnet screen. These values indicate the RSS (receive signal strength) of the RF packets from the bridge whose MAC Address you entered above. This is the amount of power (measured in dBm) received, and reflects the net RSS above the noise floor.

Important Note: Received signal strength values in field deployments are optimally between 18 and 35. RSS values in a bench test can be as high as 75. The difference in values between bench tests and field deployments is due to loss of signal strength along the wireless path, alignment changes, and other environmental variables that change signal strength in real world installations.

Physical Antenna Alignment and fine tuning Received Signal Strength

To fine tune signal strength and optimize data throughput between two bridges (Side A and Side B), you will need to run the test described above on Side B while doing the physical antenna adjustment on Side A.

When finished with the physical adjustment on Side A, run the test on Side A while doing the physical antenna adjustment on Side B to complete the alignment process.

The reason for performing the test at both ends of the link is that values shown are received signal strength values and reflect the focus of the antenna mounted at the other end of a link. To ensure BOTH antennas are aligned properly, you need to optimize both ends of link.

Important Note:The longer the distance the more important the tool is to creating a fast and robust link between locations.
