Abstract How to set Power Output to appropriate levels on WirelessGRID models.
The AI108-4958 models currently ship with output power set to 21 dBm, the maximum. While this may be appropriate for many or most installations, there are other situations where this should be changed: 1) Using the 5.3 GHz band: US and Canada regulations limit power in the 5.3 band to 1 Watt EIRP; with the standard 23 dBi antenna supplied by AIRAYA, this means that RF Output Power should not be set higher than 12 dBm, or the limit will be violated. The 5.8 GHz band does allow full power to be used. 2) Close distances: With the 23 dBi antennas and 21 dBm power, and at distances less than two miles (3.2 km), the units can produce RSSI readings of over 40 dB. Higher RSSI readings and higher power is not always better. Very high RSSI readings can mean receiver circuits can be overloaded and cause errors, reducing throughput, and excessive power can cause interference to other users of the spectrum. You should always adjust output power to keep RSSI under 40 - more than that never helps, and can hurt. Ideally, RSSI readings should be between 25 and 35. A change in output power of 3 dB should change the RSSI by about 6 dB.
